Seth Kelly, MD, MBA, FACEP, FAEMS

Seth has more than 25 years of operational experience in prehospital medicine in the fire/rescue/EMS service as well as strategy and management consulting experience in homeland security, disaster preparedness, and emergency response. He completed an emergency medicine residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD, and an EMS fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also served as a flight physician for STAT MedEvac. He is dual board-certified in Emergency Medicine and EMS, holds an MBA from the University of Maryland, and maintains his National Registered Paramedic licensure. He serves as medical advisor to several regional technical rescue, tactical, and wilderness search and rescue teams and is a medical officer with the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) Trauma and Critical Care Team (TCCT). He is primarily responsible for the central Springfield (Baystate Medical Center) and Baystate Noble regions in addition to overall leadership of the Baystate Health EMS program. Dr. Kelly is originally from Marblehead, MA, and is happy to be back in New England to meet, work with, and learn from all our prehospital clinicians in the region.

Ken started his career in EMS as an EMT in Connecticut and a volunteer firefighter in New York.  He completed medical school at New York Medical College and a residency in Emergency Medicine at Baystate Health.  He continued his EMS interests by pursuing an EMS fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.  Ken is dual board-certified in Emergency Medicine and EMS.  He splits his clinical work between Baystate Medical Center and Baystate Wing Hospital.  He is excited to be a part of the division and continues to work towards improving EMS at the regional, state, and national levels. During his off time Ken enjoys golf and spending time with his family.

Matthew Shapiro, DO

  • Associate Regional EMS Medical Director

  • Resident/Medical Student EMS Rotation Director

Matt is returning to the area after completing an EMS fellowship at Yale University and an emergency medicine residency at Baystate Health. Before medical school, Dr. Shapiro served as an EMT in several EMS settings: volunteer, private, and, later, third service with Boston EMS. Originally from Swampscott, MA, his interests outside of medicine include spending time with family and friends, running, and going to the beach. He is excited to join the team and is eager to continue working with everyone in an ongoing effort to improve prehospital care in our region. We are excited to welcome Dr. Shapiro to the team and look forward to benefitting from the knowledge and experience he will bring with him.

Joseph Schmidt, MD, Critical Care Transport Medical Director

Joe has an emergency medicine career spanning over 30 years.  He trained as an EMT during his undergraduate education, went on to medical school at Boston University, and to residency in Emergency Medicine at San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium.  During his active-duty career in the Air Force, he served as the EMS Medical Director for the Kelly/Lackland AFB complex.  Trained as a flight surgeon, he participated in critical care transport as a team member of the MAST (Military Assistance to Safety and Traffic - Army rotary wing), CCATT (Critical Care Air Transport Team – Air Force fixed wing), and MFST (Mobile Forward Surgical Team).  Joe has worn multiple hats since arriving at Baystate in 2000, including Program Director of the Emergency Medicine residency and Vice Chair and Chief of the Baystate Emergency Department. Joe is happy to have had the opportunity over the last 3 years to re-engage in critical care transport medicine as the Associate Medical Director for the Baystate Health/AMR Critical Care Transport Team, a fully licensed, Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS)-accredited ground critical care transport service.

Dr. Mathew Goebel, MD, MAS, NRP, EMS Fellow

Mat Goebel is an emergency medicine physician and former paramedic, EKG tech, and sound engineer. Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, he graduated from medical school at the University of California at San Diego, where he also obtained a Master of Advanced Studies degree in Clinical Research. He went on to complete emergency medicine residency at UMass Chan Baystate Medical Center. He remained at Baystate to complete an NIH funded research fellowship, during which he obtained an additional certificate in Clinical and Translational Research from Tufts University. He is currently an EMS fellow at Baystate. His clinical and research interests include EMS, STEMI, cardiac arrest, EKGs, cybersecurity, natural language processing, data visualization, and applications of machine learning. Dr. Goebel will be completing his EMS fellowship with our team through June 2024.

Kevin Clark, EMS Coordinator

Kevin Clark has been working in the EMS field for seven years. He has had the opportunity to work for a multitude of EMS systems to include commercial, hospital based and volunteer agencies. He has worked in various provider and leadership rolls, most recently, Kevin has been employed in the Baystate Health Capacity Management Center where he worked closely with both facility staff and area EMS agencies to ensure high quality and on time interfacility care/transports . In 2014 he attended his paramedic program at the New Britain EMS Academy in New Britain, CT. Kevin is still actively practicing as a paramedic in Southern CT. When he is not at work, Kevin enjoys any sort of outdoor activities with friends. And while they haven’t won a Super Bowl since he was 2 years old, he is a die-hard 49ers fan! Kevin will primarily work with the Franklin County catchment area.

Liz Martinek, MS, EMS Coordinator

Liz is a paramedic with over 10 years of EMS experience in Western Mass. She began her career as an EMT in Springfield, later working as a paramedic and Service Quality Manager for an ALS service in Chicopee. Liz has been with the division for over 5 years, starting as an Ambulance Coordinator working closely with both facility staff and area EMS agencies to ensure high quality and on-time interfacility care and transports. Liz graduated from Springfield College with her bachelor’s degree in EMS Management and her paramedic certification. She also attended Mass Maritime Academy and completed her master’s degree in Emergency Management. When she’s not working, she enjoys reading and spending time with her husband, 2 children and her mini Australian Shepherd. Liz will spend her time split between Noble Hospital in Westfield and Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

Melissa Consolini, EMS Coordinator

Melissa is a paramedic who has worked in Western Massachusetts for the last 16 years. Melissa specializes in Quality Improvement and EMS education. She has years of dispatch experience and her impeccable organization and attention to detail are some of her strongest attributes. She has spent the last few years implementing and strengthening a robust Education and Quality Assurance program, with a passion for respiratory care. Melissa comes to the Division of Prehospital and Disaster Medicine as an experienced AHA instructor for multiple disciplines, as well as NAEMT AMLS. In her free time, Melissa competes in triathlons, is an avid runner and enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters. Melissa will spend her time at Wing Hospital.
