Baystate Health/UMass Chan Medical School-Baystate EMS Fellowship

The Division of Prehospital and Disaster Medicine at Baystate Health in Western Massachusetts is excited to recruit for an EMS Fellow for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year. The Baystate Health/UMass Chan Medical School-Baystate Emergency Medical Services Fellowship is a 1-year, ACGME-accredited program that will prepare the Fellow for EMS subspecialty board certification.

We aim to bring a higher level of care to the prehospital setting and build system leaders who are proficient in providing medical direction outside the walls of the hospital through partnerships with our EMS agencies and clinicians. Using a combination of didactic and experiential activities, our Fellow will develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of a competent EMS Physician.

Baystate Health is affiliated with 17 ALS agencies, 9 BLS agencies, 27 First Responder agencies, 7 Emergency Medical Dispatch centers, and 1 EMT Program. Baystate Health, in partnership with American Medical Response of Massachusetts, operates a CAMTS-accredited Critical Care Ground Transport Program for adult and pediatric patients. Baystate Health also partners with Hartford HealthCare/LifeStar for air medical transport. In addition to working with these programs, the Fellow will also have the opportunity to teach and train with regional tactical, search and rescue, marine/dive, and technical rescue teams.

Our EMS Fellow will have access to a Baystate Health-owned EMS Physician vehicle to facilitate real-time provider education and training and to bring a higher level of care to scene responses, large scale events, and multiple/mass casualty incidents.

Western Massachusetts has a population of approximately 800,000 people with diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.  Our Fellow will be exposed to prehospital care in a variety of population densities, from very rural to urban.  Transport times for our affiliated services range from a few minutes to an hour or more.

Baystate Health is a major healthcare system covering a broad catchment area in Western Massachusetts. Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA is the network’s primary academic, tertiary care center (including an Emergency Medicine Residency Program) with an annual ED volume of over 120,000 patients per year, and is a Level 1 trauma center, Level 2 pediatric trauma center, cardiac/PCI, and designated stroke center.  There are also three community hospitals: Baystate Wing (Palmer, MA), Baystate Noble (Westfield, MA) and Baystate Franklin (Greenfield, MA). The Division of Prehospital and Disaster Medicine comprises 3 fellowship-trained faculty EMS Physicians and 5 experienced Paramedics who serve as EMS Coordinators and Managers.
